What three drivers actually had to hand over

Yerevan Car Hire is a comparison site. It reads a live feed of around three hundred and fifty cars offered by rental companies based in Yerevan, puts them in the grid above, and hands you to whichever one you pick. It owns no cars, signs no hire agreements and takes no payments. That is the reason this policy is short: there is very little here to collect in the first place.

Three people who booked through this site and then stood at a counter in Yerevan, on what was and was not asked of them.

★★★★★

The booking asked for dates and a name. I showed my licence at the desk, in my hand, the way you show a licence. Nothing was uploaded anywhere.
Agnese Berzina Riga, Latvia

★★★★★

No card was touched when I reserved. The deposit only came up at the counter, and it was a few euros rather than a few hundred.
Lukas Varga Bratislava, Slovakia

★★★★

I asked for delivery, so they were given my address. That is the only detail about me that left my own hands, and it left it once.
Hanne Fosse Bergen, Norway

Asking for a copy, a correction or a deletion

Three moves, and the third one is not ours to make for you.

  1. Write

Send the request to [email protected]. There is no account here, so there is no login to prove and nothing to verify beyond the address you are writing from.

  2. We look

There are two places to look: the server log and the mailbox. If your address sits in either, it comes out. If it sits in neither, we will say so plainly rather than send you in a circle.

  3. Ask the counter

The booking record is not ours to delete. It belongs to the rental company you contracted with, whose details are on the confirmation they sent you, and they answer for it under the law of Armenia.

Armenia sits outside the EEA, and there is no adequacy decision

Armenia is not a member of the European Economic Area, and the European Commission has issued no adequacy decision for it. Stated plainly, a transfer of personal data from the EEA to Armenia is not automatically covered the way a transfer to a member state would be. It needs a legal footing of its own.

That sentence alarms people more than it should in this particular case, and the reason is in the ledger further down this page. For a transfer to need a safeguard, something has to be transferred. This website sends no driving licence, no card number and no identity document anywhere, because it never receives one. What crosses the border is a search: dates, a pickup point, and the request record your browser leaves on every server it speaks to.

The booking is a different matter, and it is worth being exact about it. When you choose a car, you contract with a company registered in Armenia, and your details reach that company directly rather than through us. Their handling is governed by the law of Armenia and by their own notice. If you want to know how long a counter keeps a scan of your licence, that question belongs to them, and they are the only party able to answer it.

What actually applies

  • The Law on Protection of Personal Data

The statute that governs how a company operating in Armenia may handle what it collects from you.

  • The Personal Data Protection Agency

The supervisory body, sitting within the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia.

  • The GDPR, by reach rather than by map

This site is offered to travellers living in the European Union and the United Kingdom, so their rules follow the offer across the border.

  • The hire agreement itself

The contract you sign at the counter. It, and not this page, decides what the supplier may keep and for how long.

How long anything survives here, and what happens when this page changes

Request records rotate out of the server log on an ordinary operating cycle. They exist so the site can be kept up and abuse can be spotted, not so anyone can be profiled, and they are never joined to a booking because the booking never lands on this side. A message you send us is kept while the matter is open and removed once it is closed.

Cookies are dealt with on their own page rather than buried in this one, since the detail belongs there: read the cookie policy for what is set and by whom. The part that matters for privacy is that the car search runs perfectly well whether or not you accept anything optional, so nothing is being held hostage to a consent click.

We use no advertising profiles, sell nothing to anybody, and run no mailing list. There is therefore no list to be removed from, which is a better guarantee than a promise not to misuse one. The terms of use cover the other half of the relationship: who you are contracting with, and who answers for the car.

If this policy changes, the revised version replaces this one at this address, and the page you are reading is always the current one. Anything you want to raise, including a complaint about how a request was handled, goes to [email protected].

What each side of this booking ends up holding

This is the full ledger. The left column lists every detail a car hire involves. The middle column is what reaches this website. The right column is what reaches the company whose car you drive away. Most of the middle column is a description of something not happening.

Detail This website The supplier that owns the car
Your name Never asked for. Nothing on this domain has a registration step. Typed into the booking panel and received by the company that owns the car.
Driving licence Never seen. There is no upload field anywhere on this site. Checked in person at handover, by the counter staff who are required to check it.
Card details No payment page exists on this domain, so there is nothing to enter. Only on the listings that take a deposit, and only on their payment side.
Dates and pickup point Sent to the supplier feed as a search with no name attached to it. Held as the booking once you confirm one.
A delivery address Not collected. The grid above never asks where you are staying. Needed on the listings that bring the car to you, about one in four of them.
IP address and browser In the ordinary server log, used to keep the site standing and to spot abuse. Their own logs, under their own notice, once you reach their booking step.
Your email address Only if you write to us first, and only for as long as that thread is open. Needed to send you the confirmation and to reach you about the car.
The signed hire agreement We are not a party to it and never receive a copy. Theirs, kept under the retention rules that apply to them.

Questions about any row in this table go to [email protected].

Where you live decides who you complain to

The rights are broadly the same. The authority behind them is not.

The GDPR reaches this site because the site is offered to travellers living in the Union, even though it is operated for a market outside it. You can ask us for access to what we hold, for a correction, and for deletion, and you can complain to the supervisory authority of the country you live in.

For the booking rather than the browsing, the controller is the rental company in Armenia, so the practical route runs to them first. Write to us in parallel if you like. We will tell you which of the two holds the thing you are asking about, which is usually the faster half of the answer.

The UK GDPR works the same way and for the same reason, and the Information Commissioner's Office is the authority to approach. The rights you can exercise against this site are identical to those in the European Union panel.

One point is specific to you. The United Kingdom has not granted Armenia adequacy either, so a transfer from the UK rests on exactly the footing described further up this page, which in our case means almost nothing of yours is transferred at all. The deposit, where a listing takes one, is the only place a payment detail enters the picture, and it does so on the supplier side.

If you live in Armenia, the Law on Protection of Personal Data applies directly, and the Personal Data Protection Agency within the Ministry of Justice is the body to approach. No cross-border question arises, because the supplier, the car and the counter are all here.

If you live somewhere covered by neither framework, write to us anyway. The answer will be the same one, because we keep a single process rather than three, and because the amount of data involved does not justify a second one.

The questions this page gets

No, and there is no step on this site at which you could show it to us if you wanted to. The licence is checked in person when you collect the car, by the company that owns it, at their counter in Yerevan. No image of it, no number from it and no expiry date off it reaches this website before, during or after a booking.
There is no account. Nothing on this domain asks you to register, so no profile accumulates behind your visits and there is no password to lose. Your language choice and your answer on cookies are stored in your own browser rather than on our side, which means clearing the browser clears them.
It cannot. There is no payment page on this domain. Every car listed for Yerevan is marked as bookable without a credit card, and in the hundred listings we last counted roughly one in eight freezes nothing at all, while the rest ask for a small deposit worth about EUR 7 or less. Either way the card is handled on the supplier side.
An address, and only to the supplier. About a quarter of the Yerevan listings include free delivery, and taking one means telling the company where to bring the car. That is normally the only location detail a booking here involves, and it never passes through us.
It is worth understanding rather than worrying about. The absence of an adequacy decision means a transfer of personal data from the European Economic Area to Armenia needs a legal basis of its own. This comparison site transfers no licence, no card and no identity document, because it never holds one. The supplier does hold them, and holds them as a company you contracted with directly, which is a separate and well established footing.

The grid asks for a date, not for your documents

Every car listed for Yerevan can be reserved without a credit card, and nothing you type into the search carries your name.
