Price is the fourth most useful column on these cards. Here are the three that come before it.

  1. 1

    Fix the days

Work out which mornings you are actually driving out of the city before you open a single listing. On a board this flat, the number of days you book moves your total far more than the choice between one saloon and the next one down the list.

  2. 2

    Check the hold

The deposit line is the first real difference between two cars at the same rate. In a hundred-car sample, about twelve asked for no hold at all, and close to nine in ten wanted something small, in the region of seven euro or less.

  3. 3

    Check the cancellation

Roughly six listings in ten in that sample could be dropped free. For a trip whose best days depend on mountain weather, that one flag is worth more than shaving a euro or two off the rate.

  4. 4

    Check the handover

Free delivery was attached to about one listing in four. A car that arrives on the morning you leave is a car you stopped paying for on the days it would have sat outside your flat.

The three terms that separate two identical cars

Two Kia Fortes a euro apart can be very different bookings. This is where the difference actually sits.

Begin with the part that is already settled. Every listing in this city reports as bookable without a credit card, which removes the thing most visitors arrive worrying about, and it applies across the whole board rather than to a handful of special cars.

What is left to compare is the size of the hold. In the hundred-car sample, about a dozen held nothing whatsoever. Close to nine in ten asked for a small amount, in the region of seven euro or less. Neither of those resembles the four-figure block you may have braced for after hiring somewhere on the Mediterranean.

Because the figure is printed on each card before you confirm, you can use it as a filter instead of meeting it at the desk. If you want zero held, those cars exist and there are enough of them to pick from, but they are the minority, so look for them at the start of your search rather than the end of it.

Free cancellation has the widest spread of the three, and it is the one worth paying a little for. Roughly six in ten cars in the sample carried it. The remaining four in ten did not, and two listings sitting side by side at the same rate can land on opposite sides of that line without anything else distinguishing them.

It counts for more here than it would at a beach destination. The drives people hire for in Armenia climb: the road north into the forest, the pass above the lake, the canyon roads running south. Weather closes them and itineraries built around them move. A booking you can unwind costs nothing to keep.

Read the cancellation line together with the deposit line rather than one after the other. A car that holds nothing but cannot be cancelled carries a different risk from one that holds a few euro and can be. Work out which of the two you actually mind, then filter for it.

About one listing in four in the sample includes free delivery, and of the three terms this is the one that can genuinely change what you spend, because it changes how many days you need a car at all.

The central Kentron grid does not need one. It is walkable, taxis inside it are plentiful, and a hire car sitting there for three days is three days of rental you did not use plus a parking space you had to find twice a day. Having the car brought to you on the morning you leave turns those days back into nothing.

If the car does come to you, settle the address and the time inside the booking rather than afterwards. Delivery is part of what the supplier is offering on that card, not a favour arranged on the side, so it belongs in what you confirm.

We sorted by price, then went back and sorted by cancellation instead. The car cost a little more and we moved our dates twice for nothing.

Took the cheapest Elantra on the board. Older than its photograph, completely fine over the pass, and what they held on the card was tiny.

Delivery is what saved us money, not the rate. The car reached us on the Thursday we drove out, rather than the Monday we landed.

Cheap here is a question about terms

Hunting for a price works where the board is wide. In a market with city runabouts at one end and German estates at the other, the daily rate is the decision and everything else follows from it. Yerevan is not that market. Take a hundred cars from the roughly three hundred and fifty listed here and the entire range, floor to ceiling, fits inside about seventeen euro a day.

Narrow it and it gets stranger still. A quarter of that sample sits at or below about EUR 36, and the middle of it lands near EUR 39. The distance between a typical car and the outright cheapest one is a few euro a day, which over a short hire adds up to very little. An evening spent chasing that gap is an evening badly spent.

What does vary, and varies widely, is everything the listing attaches to the rate. Every car in the feed here can be booked without a credit card, which is unusual enough on its own, but past that the cards diverge. Some hold nothing. Most hold a little. Some can be cancelled free, others cannot. Some will be driven to your address, others expect you at a counter. Those are the real product differences in this city, and not one of them appears in a sort by price.

So invert the usual method. Filter down to the terms you need, then take the cheapest car still standing. Because the board is flat, that car will sit within a few euro of the outright cheapest one anyway, and you will have bought a free cancellation and a delivery with the difference. Yerevan Car Hire lists what local suppliers have available for the dates you enter, so the terms printed on the card are the terms you are booking.

One sample, one very flat board

Counted across a hundred cars pulled from the live Yerevan list. The feed moves within the day, so read these as the shape of the market rather than as a quote.

About EUR 28

the cheapest day rate anywhere in the sample

About EUR 36

where the bottom quarter of the list stops

About EUR 39

the middle of the same hundred cars

About EUR 45

the dearest car on the board, not a different class

Floor to ceiling, that is a spread of about seventeen euro a day across everything on offer. The terms behind those four figures are not nearly so uniform.

Before you filter by price

Because nothing stretches the top of the board. The sample ran from roughly EUR 28 a day at the bottom to about EUR 45 at the top, and almost every car in between is the same proposition: a Korean or Japanese automatic saloon, a Forte, an Elantra, a Sentra. With one body style and one gearbox doing nearly all the work, there is very little left for suppliers to compete on except the terms attached to the booking.
Usually age rather than anything that changes your week. Only about a quarter of the sample was flagged as new, so the bottom of the board tends to be the older end of the same model list rather than a smaller class of car. There is barely a class below it to drop into. The thing worth checking on a cheap listing is not the size of the car, it is whether it still carries free cancellation and free delivery, because those are the lines that vary most.
Put both date ranges into the form and compare, because what you see is what the supplier quotes for those dates rather than a fixed tariff. The cheaper answer is often neither. Around one car in four in the sample is delivered free, so taking the car only on the mornings you drive out of Yerevan can beat a continuous week that spends half of itself parked.
That is set by the supplier, not by us, and it is printed on the car card before you confirm. The listings in this city do not all share one policy, so read that line on the specific car you are booking instead of assuming the usual like-for-like return. Mileage limits and any extra-driver fee sit on the same card and are worth reading at the same time.

Pick on terms, then take the cheapest one left

The board is flat. The terms are not. Sort by what gets held, what can be cancelled and what gets delivered.
